Ian Grigg was born in Boort, Victoria, and spent his formative years immersed in the rural surrounds of various country towns before moving to Melbourne with his family at age 13.
After high school, Ian studied sculpture at the Caulfield Institute of Technology (CIT), followed by graphics at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT). He spent several years working as a graphic designer in Australia and London, travelling extensively throughout Europe, the Middle East and Asia before returning to Australia to further his career in graphic design.
Inspired by his travels, Ian exhibited throughout the mid 1980s and early 1990s, building up a devoted following. And while a successful career in graphic design has kept him busy, his commitment to fine art continues, driven by a ‘desire to just paint’ and to enjoy the challenge of creating.
Ian’s distinctive use of texture and symbolism is apparent from his early figurative works to his later abstract landscapes. Ian often uses his hands rather than a brush, to build and shape a painting, showing a direct contact between the artist and the work. His paintings display a strong connection to both the Australian bush and to the ocean. Ian lives and works in Melbourne.
